FEARnet’s new show Holliston doesn’t premiere until April third, but there was an advanced screening last night for the fans who were watching the sneak preview. Luckily, I was watching the sneak preview, so I got to watch the first episode before it aired! The show is about the journey of two best friends, Adam and Joe, who aspire to become horror filmmakers in the town of Holliston, Massachusetts. Fresh out of college and working for little to nothing at a local cable company, the the two friends use camera equipment from their place of work to make their film projects. The show demonstrates just how tough life after higher education can be. Together, Adam and Joe borrow money and gas from Joe’s girlfriend, Laura, and run out on bills at restaraunts. Basically, the show is about Adam’s life before he made it big, with a few more horror jokes thrown in. Adam’s ex-girlfriend Corri, a.k.a. the love of his life, moves back to Holliston, prompting Adam to try and win her back. Does he stand a chance? Will he and Joe become famous horror movie directors? Probably, since they are in real life, but you’ll just have to tune in tomorrow night and find out!
Some of Adam Green’s fans are worried that this show marks the start of Mr. Green selling out. I’m here to tell you that this is not the case. Although this show is a sit-com, and deals with many elements that other shows do, I can already tell that this show will be different. For one thing, Adam has an imaginary friend named Oderus (yes that’s right, the alien from GWAR!), who lives in his closet and tells him to do awful things like “get a hooker”. There’s also exploding heads, peeling faces, throats being slit, people getting shot, and everything else a fan of the genre could hope for. Not to mention, they’re constantly referencing scary movies, by reenacting them or just by talking about them in casual conversation.
The girls are great, too. I became a fan of Laura Ortiz when I saw her in Joe Lynch’s Zom-B-Movie. In Holliston, she is adorable, as always, yet sadistic, which makes her all the more cute, surprisingly. I’m convinced that no one else could fill her shoes in this role. And Corri English manages to attain sympathy for her character, even though she’s the ex-girlfriend that we’re all supposed to hate because we all love Adam Green so much. Or…at least I do. Y’all feel that way too, right?
Although he’s spent countless hours hidden behind the camera, Adam is a very good actor. He’s really funny! I was laughing through the whole episode. He’s also able to switch between being silly and being dramatic, and he makes it believeable. I felt so sorry for him as he pined for Corri, even though I know it’s just a show and they’re not really together. Basically, I’m already hooked. I’m in horror movie heaven, and I never would’ve guessed that would happen because of a T.V. show. Everyone should watch the first episode tomorrow night when it officially airs for the first time on the FEARnet channel. You’ll laugh so hard, your head will roll.
