‘The Bay’ (2012) Trailer

  1. So, as I’m watching this, I can’t help but think of Apollo 18. As I’m watching the trailer for it, I was immediately enthralled with the idea of astronauts finding a corpse on the moon ( I still think this is an interesting idea to explore and a different conversation ). Imagine my disappointment when I actually go see the movie and we learn SPOLIER ALERT that there are rock monsters/bugs on the moon. It was a huge let down. I think The Bay is kinda the same; really interesting but ultimately hampered experience. What makes the trailer for The Bay particularly frustrating is I feel like I’ve already seen the whole movie; seemingly normal day is slowly inundated with unusal events that are discovered, by characters I ‘m probably not going to care about, to be bugs that eat/turn people crazy ??? for no reason at all. True, you could reduce any movie to a basic element and make it sound silly but this one looks like it colors within the lines a bit too much. There isn’t anything wrong with the found footage genre per se, but a game changer would be nice, or needed. I’d like to think there is going to be some mystery, as was the case with the Apollo 18 trailer and why I went to see it, but my gut is telling me there just isn’t anything here. In any case, I think the audience will be way ahead of the movie on this one, which is never good. If someone had asked me, I would have omitted the bug stuff from the trailer to retain some sense of the dread and probably increase interest rather than answer it. I think you were right to think this movie is iffy.

    1. I agree that they should have hidden the part about the bugs. Some of my favorite films have been the ones that I went into with little to no prior knowledge of the plot. Now, like you said, the audience will know what to expect. Instead of being terrified and unaware of what’s in the water, they’ll be antsy, thinking “I know already, it’s the bugs, just move on.” I think there are some really good found footage films, but it is getting a little old, and I was hoping they’d do a little more to mix things up. That’s just my opinion, though. Hopefully, I’ll have such low expectations that this movie will blow me away. Hopefully.
