Just when you thought that every horrifying aspect of home invasion had been executed, writer/director James DeMonaco brings a new perspective to the sub-genre. The Purge plays out the idea of a world where one night a year, no legal restraints are enforced. In other words, all crime is legal for twelve straight hours. The idea behind this event is that crime rates will lower altogether, if people are allowed to act out their aggressions for a short period of time without punishment. One family in particular usually keeps to themselves on this night of violence, until a random citizen cries out for help, and is taken in by their child. Much to their dismay, the stranger’s perpetrators follow him to the family’s home, and threaten forced entrance if their captive isn’t returned within the hour. Now, it’s up to a peaceful family to protect themselves and their home from the destruction of those who seek to to act out their morbid fantasies, and hold out until the purge ends.
